Context
Starting in 2024, due to a platform-wide visual refresh of Pinterest’s consumer and business products, design and engineering teams were required to adopt the Gestalt Design System. Product leadership identified a contribution model as a key driver in adoption, but existing processes were opaque and created a high barrier to entry.
A lightweight, low-friction contribution model was a key driver in increasing system adoption, supporting the efficient rollout of the latest design language, and promoting shared ownership—Gestalt belongs to everyone.
Because of a tight timeline, we released a design-only MVP that we could iterate on and improve later. This also meant that an engineering model had to come later as a fast-follow.
